Coastal Settlement Concept for Hopa City Center
Project Information
Project type: Competition
Landscape Architect: MAAV Tasarim
Location: Hopa, Turkey
Date: 2025
This project aims to ensure the sustainable development of Hopa by holistically addressing its coastal, urban, and rural areas. The planning process prioritizes the following key objectives:
Strengthening Public Spaces and Revitalizing Urban Centers
To enhance the connection between the coast and the city, traffic calming measures will be integrated along the coastline and Sundura River, and public spaces in these areas will be redesigned. This transformation will improve access to recreational areas that support social life.
Additionally, to strengthen Hopa’s urban identity, encourage social interaction, and establish the city as a regional attraction, the existing building stock will be renewed. Historic and cultural assets will be preserved while being integrated with modern architectural approaches.
Ecological Restoration and Nature-Inspired Urban Design
To enhance Hopa’s environmental resilience, the preservation, restoration, and integration of natural ecosystems into the urban fabric are prioritized. In particular, sustainable urban design solutions will be developed to support ecological balance in river and coastal areas.
Urban Transformation and a Sustainable City Economy
To strengthen Hopa’s economic structure, local production, trade, and tourism opportunities will be restructured. Urban transformation policies will be implemented in alignment with sustainability principles to ensure long-term economic and social viability.
